Following on from a Bushido demo day on the 26th May (where hopefully everyone will have got themselves a starter set!), I'm also running a one day Bushido Tournement in The Outpost, Sheffield on Sunday 17th June.
When I get some time, I'll make a proper web page that will have all the details on it, but for now, you'll want the following info:
* Competitive Tournement playing 4 scenarios over the course of the day.
* Tickets will be £15 and will include an awesome tex-mex lunch from a local business foodie.
* Games played on newly made, well decorated tables with all scenery provided.
* Prize support will be a mixture of in store vouchers and Bushido blisters to a total value of around £100
* Open to anyone with a minimum of a Bushido starter set (no proxies and must at least be based & assembled but there is a prize for best painted, so good reason to make an effort!).
* Provisionally 16 tickets available, but can open up to 24 if demand is there.
That pretty much covers the basics.
As mentioned above, I'll make a proper site that covers format, location map and a Paypal button to buy tickets in a week or so, but for now, get the date in you diary for the Clash of The North Kingdoms!

Sounds great, everyone loves Tex-Mex :)

Exactly! And there's not enough tex mex around. I guess Chinese / sushi woulda been more topical, but ts what the outpost recommend!
Looking forward to this. What's the actual rice cost for the tourney 35? 50? 55?
I was fantastic! And it was a bloody good laugh!

Haven't quite decided yet.
As there's a demo day in sheffield a few weeks before where a lot of people are interested in trying and then buying, I suspect a fair few people will only have th starter sets for the tournie.
For that reason Im thinking of saying bring a 55 rice list, but also bring the starter set for your faction, so if you end up against a new person, you can still have an equal match.
Sound reasonable?
I'll be there unless something goes horribly wrong:)

Awesome.
A friend just pointed out that it's fathers day on the 17th June. I'm guessing that wont be a problem... it is *your* day after all... just in case anyone has wives that would prefer it to be a "Family" day (as I did a few years ago when a Conf tournie was on - this year she's visiting a friend for the weekend riding horses while our boys are away on holiday with gtrandparents, so obv not a problem for me!!) please do tell me asap in case I need to rebook it.
thanks all - please remember to tell your friends, organise a car pool etc - we can always extend ticket numbers if need be.
OK! Ive finally got the demo day webpage finished and up :-
Its also a bit of a teaser as to what the full tournament page will look like :)
That page looks great!

Give me a week and the tournie page will completely blow it out of the water (especially if you're using chrome or safari)
I'm planning to come to the tourney. How's the tex-mex veggie option?
EDIT: If it's from the local Burrito place just up towards Fargate then it's awesome. Really.
I believe it is yes - we actually know the woman who runs it, Abi, talkin web design stuff with her... I'm sure veggie option will be fine - i'll be collecting those details on ticket purchase.
Just trying to finish the tournie page with payment stuff tomo, ready fore weekend... Need to promote the demo day tho!
Hi,
Four of us picked up various starter boxes at the recent uk games expo and are looking to make the trip over.

Great news, where are you guys from? NWGS?
"To a real warrior, power perceived may be power achieved."
Yeah we call that place home.
T
Awesome!
Well, I just put the tournie site live - http://thenorthkingdoms.co.uk/ so you can buy a ticket there.
Please let me know if you have any probs with the buying process.
That is he sexy site, never seen anything like it for tournaments before and I've been gaming for years.
Will talk to the guys and get some ordered tomorrow.
Cheers
T
My place ordered and paid for. Looking forward to it. Superb site by the way.

Thanks all!
Spent way more time than a tournie event site should really have taken, but web design is my job, and it was a great exercise in creativity and a good proof of concept for more commercial projects.
It scales between smartphones and full screens eally well and if you use chrome or safari you'll get a few extra fancy bits too.
The one downside of running the tournie is I won't really get a chance to play in and try win myself a faction blister or other prize.
Ah well.
At least greeny will get to this time :)
I got to play last time due to odd numbers, this time I'll get to play without stressing my opponents out by disappearing to take photo's/collect results/ring gongs etc:) looking forward to it! will pick up ticket this weekend when I've cleared stuff with Rudders and the family:)

I guess I'll be available if we do have odd numbers, bu I really hope not - first tournie ive organised so I don't think it's wise - my head will be fried as it is, just keepingn top of stuff!
Great website! Really like what you've done with the tournament and looking forward to it. tickets tomorrow hopefully!

Cheers!
Howdy, i plan on coming to the tournament with countmoore (my names on his list but has been spelt wrong! It should read Nige Chorlton, not chorley).
Will speak to him about ordering tickets and order them as soon as possible.
Also, just like to add my praise on the tournie website, absolutely brilliant site to look at, and like countmoore said, i've been gaming for years and never seen a tournament site as nice as that!
With thanks.
thanks again - it should be pretty good - it is my day job after all!!... complete overkill, but still fun to do.
hope to see you all there on the 17th too - it's gonna be awesome - lots of prizes up for grabs and the first of its kind (and hopefully first of many) in the North of England.
Ticket bought for Nigel Chorlton (countmoore and the others are going to buy theirs soon).
Chosen faction Prefecture Of Ryu. Time to crack on with the painting!
Awesome - thanks for that. Need some people representing he cult and wave now!
Ticket bought, let's see how the monks get in. Quick question playing 35 rice does it have to be the official starters or can we make our own lists?
Cheers
T
Couldn't find a way to add multiple tickets but might just be me, either way Darran Plamer and Chelsea Smith join the ranks with Oni and a temple respectively
Cheers
T
I decided to limit the ticket transactions to just one each so I could easily collect the faction choices and dietary requirements... would be nice to buy tickets in bundles tho... will look into that when I organise the next one.
I've also just got the Tournie Pack finished off and up on the site at the bottom of the Format section.
Still got a few tickets left - £110 worth of prizes going, and if you're still in need of some convincing, The Outpost will also finally be getting in Bushido stock and to mark this joyous occasion will be selling it all at a 20% discount on the tournie day.
What more could you ask for?!
That great news. So now I don't have to worry about not winning anything as I can buy it discounted later on haha.
I was fantastic! And it was a bloody good laugh!

Exactly ;) ... but winning is also nice!
You bought your ticket yet?
Moosh, bought my ticket a week or so ago. Im the one with the undecided faction. Just cant make up my mind between, Prefecture, Cult, Wave or Temple

@moos- nice pack, like the blood points rules
@deathjester- if it helps make your mind up, I'm still the only cult player, and If i did win the rats I would be passing them on to second place as I got them at Jwardiff...
Never tell me the odds: Han Solo;)
(avatar from http://www.sillof.com/C-samuraiwars.htm)
@Deathjester - preferably one of the less represented factions?
@greeny - cheers - I had a good starting point :)
Totally agree the tourne pack looks great.
"To a real warrior, power perceived may be power achieved."
Hi,
Had a practice on scenario 3 last night and we were a tad confused about the placement of the shrine.
We came to two conclusions:-
1. It has to touch the board edge on your opponents half
2. It has to be in their half
We played option 1 after a dice off but would appreciate knowing for Sunday.
Cheers
T
Nope, just in the opponents half of the board, outside of the 6" deployment square.
"To a real warrior, power perceived may be power achieved."
We played thru them last might too and has the same question - we guessed right.
On that scenario tho, to despoil a shrine, does there have to be an offering on it to be able to remove it? The wording says you "may" remove an offering so I'm assuming the simple action of despoiling a shrine still despoils it even if there are no offering tokens on it... Important as the initial rush to get first offering / despoil means it likely doesn't have any offerings on it.
Correct?
bump... does despoil require an offering counter to work?
I would rule it requires an offering counter to be removed to despoil. Personally i think the despoil Victory point needs looking at as it can discourage players for playing for the scenario as its easy for your action to be place and offering and then the next players action to despoil it. This means two actions and the game is auto a 1 - 1 VP for each player which seems wrong. Maybe it should be
More Offerings on your Shrine than opponents places on there's - 1VP
First to place an offering in a turn in which the opponent doesnt - 1VP
?????
"To a real warrior, power perceived may be power achieved."
looking at the results from Jwardiff, pretty much every game was at least 1-1, so that probably is an issue, how about leave the despoil rule VP as is, but either-
would these work any better?

I must say when playing I didn't want to out an offering down as @nigehelm had a despoil counter so something should be changed.
Maybe
First to place offering 1vp
Most offerings 1vp
Most despoils 1vp
Alternatively a turn 2,4,6 scoring mechanism based on most offerings in play at the end of those turns.
T
Happy to incorporate it into Sunday's tournie if people can decide on a new points system.
The wording does currently say "may" which suggests that is possible to despoil without removing an offering... It should probably say "must".
Maybe leave the scoring as it is as changing it now might confuse people, or Moosh make the call as the tournment organiser.
Greeny and Countmore both make good suggestions and i think it would require more debate and testing before any firm changes were made.
Thinking (whilst i should have been doing other things) about scenarios that let you remove/destroy opponents tokens, counters, markers and have an immediate VP reward are tricky as you dont want the scenario to favour a negative play style ie camping on your Shrine in this case.
"To a real warrior, power perceived may be power achieved."
Cheers to Moosh for a smooth well run event. Very happy to get best in faction (just) with the Temple and the fantastic Hotaru model.
T
Same from me. Well done to Moosh for a great tourney. Really enjoyable even though my 35 rice list was a bit hit or miss and my dice didn't seem to have anything but a 1. In the end though, by some mystical intravention I ended up best in faction with Prefecture and came 3rd overall.
Thanks to all my opponents - good sports all and big thanks again to Moosh and everyone else in making it a really fun day.
I was fantastic! And it was a bloody good laugh!

Thanks to all that came - being my first tournie I organised, it was prob good it wasn't any more really!
Some thoughts from my side of things that may be helpful for others running tournies:
Greeny / Micks tournie checklist / guide was excellent. Whilst not everything was applicable, it does help set expectations well.
The blood points mechanic seemed to work really well. From the Jwardiff tournie pack that Mick sent me to adapt and reuse as, the soft scoring, whilst seemed pretty good felt to me to be a bit too much to get my head around for my first tournie.
Outpost also asked for a kills prize as opposed to sportsman (and as they were providing those prizes, I went with it). In the end, just getting people to vote during lunch break for best painted worked fine and was dead easy to manage.
The most kills I thought was an excellent score to keep.
Bushido lends itself very well to scenario play as some games can go by with very little actual killing and focus on very clever tactical play. Having a second score for sheer amount of rice reaped works to a very different mindset, but also makes for an excellent way to resolve ties, both throughout the day in matchups but more importantly at the end for final scoring. On 2 occasions a prize was drawn and blood points resolved it v well, better IMO than VPs that were v closely related to TPs - BPs worked on more of a lateral scoring that wasn't directly related toTPs but still a very worthy value for a WARgame, as opposed to VPs that were more about taking a TP score and further refining it that was more of a literal approach to scoring.
It also highlighted something that I cold see went thru several peoples minds - by summoning large amounts of rats, bakemonos and kairai, you are potentially giving your opponent a lot more BPs. Towards the end where people were closely matched, the BPs you gave away could make the difference .
Lastly, alongside the option to play 35 and 50 rice lists, the potential to rack up big BP scores obv favoured people playing 50 lists (especially incl the 5 extra for wiping an opponents warband out which happened several times)... When you add in the 90min time limit on all games, 50 rice games then become a little more of a liability as you have to play quicker to be able to make sure it competes in time (and TPs are ultimately more important than BPs), but the extra BPs can still be important.
As it was, all games completed in less than the 90mins allocated to each which was great.
The fact that no difficult rules questions came up that needed resolving was also a big relief for me!!!
I'd be interested to hear what other people thought of this stuff, what worked well, what could've been better, which scenarios were better than others, both for myself and any other tournie organisers - I don't at all doubt there will be another (bigger) clash of the north kingdoms in the near future (November maybe?), so any improvements would be v welcome.
Thanks again for everyone who came and bearing with some of my more indecisive moments! :D
