Charge vs walk + melee attack

After 4 or 5 games of bushido, I do find this game very fun & funny. But their is a point in the rules that I don't understand.

Charge : complexe, need a los, in a straight line to get 1 melee attack (with +1 str) and then get exhausted.

Straight line = you're sensitive to ZoC.

Walk + melee attack = you do not need a LoS, you can sidestep any one who's trying to avoid the charge.

You can even try to run and make more 2,5x you base stat, instead of 2x !

All you loose is an (unsignificant ?) bonus of 1 strenght.

What do you think about it ?

If you run, -1 cp.
But i agree with your points.

Charge lets you do it all in one action (and so one activation), while walk & attack requires two. Charge is sometimes very useful, perhaps you want to lock someone up fast, for instance.

If you run first you lose one die from your combat pool not just for the activation, but for the whole turn.
Compared to a charge you would require two activations, have -1 CP for the remainder of the turn, as well as not getting +1 strength.
Running is also just in a straight line.

I follow the rules of bushido. I am a bushi.

So charge is situational at best

Yeah, sometimes situational, but not useless. Of course things with abilities that work on charges want to charge whenever they can (the gorilla comes to mind). And it does get you to the enemy a lot faster and depending on what you're facing, that timing can be key.

Sometimes it is awfully critical, sometimes a bad choice. Like running, disengaging, or, indeed, attacking. wink

Go for the right action at the right time, that's the key!

Did I type "Malhorme said it was useless, but it's situational"? I agreed with you. Don't say that I'm putting words in your mouth by putting words in mine.

Strenght boni are not unsignifcant. Strenght boni are whats doing damage in this game. Without +x strength to your attacks, your damage output sucks and depends on very good attack to very bad def rolls.

And before you expect to deal 2x zero damage (Bakemone are a good example), better charge and try to deal one.

I agree with Cain, Strength bonus does help models like bakemono with -1 strength weapons a lot more than models which are already quite good, a lone bakemono vs anything with armour/tough is likely to do sod all even if they do win, whereas Hiro a charge bonus isn't that huge a difference as he can get the same benefit by winning the fight by +1.

I find charge is either phenomenally useful or an absolute waste, if you win the tactics roll a charge can cover twice the distance and make an attack before your opponent even makes a move, and when the charging model is Zuba....

most effective charge I've ever seen- yumi boosting her movement with 6 Ki and charging 14" across the table to punch my orphan into next month. first activation of a new turn, totally unexpected, absolutely nothing I could do about it. Had she ran/melee then wrath would already have been on the table to stop her.

Never tell me the odds: Han Solo;)
