What I'm doing are gorintōs, a sort of Japanese stupa, sort of a memorial stone.
Like these:
They come in a variety of shapes, but generally five shapes on top of each other. Mine are a bit atypical, as I've only found a fairly limited supply of easily accessable shapes to play with. I might make some more shapes later.
looks interesting, a simple idea that would add some lovely chaarcter to a table. i'm tempted to knock some up myself:) as there hasn't been a competition on here for a while, feel like a gorinto-off?
So, how do we go about this? Should we have any rules, or just go for it?
Another important question is; How does a Jwarese gorintō look? Does it have more or less the same symbols as a Japanese?
The Japanese often, but not always, follow the same basic structure, with each of the five shapes representing an element (which also symbolise gods and whatnot).
I don't think Jwarese have to be the same, nor does really all Japanese follow the same pattern.
If you look at my examples, and the big one on the foreground in the first picture of real ones, you'll see that they do not.
hmm, lots to think about, how about 5 gorinto, using the traditional style(void suits my cult) or inventing something new, finished by the end of the month, winner chosen by other forum members and staff, prize is bragging rights?

(I've started casting quite a few, in good hard plaster, in molds made from oyumaru (a.k.a. InstantMold). I'll try to get some pictures up later. But I want a forest of them.)
WIP pictures are, while not mandatory, nice, I think! Few things are as inspiring - and if I can inspire someone I'm happy!
Seems like a bad combination. If you mean trying to mold airhardening clay it 'll hardly harden, as the mold probably stops much of the air coming in. And making a mold of clay is tricky, as it is stiff and hard to get the item out (unless, say, it's bronze and you destroy the mold, but I odubt you can cast bronze in airhardening clay at all).

We don't have that much rules for this thing, and I don't think we really need them.
Five gorintōs, based any way you like, I'd say. Traditional Japanese or Jwarese (or untraditional, if you like), but still obviously gorintō.
Mine will be singly based. It makes for better terrain that way, in all honesty, but that's another discussion.
I was thinking about using the air-drying clay as the casting material, then using oyumaru to make a two-part mold. The idea being that the caly would be pretty sturdy, so I could get it out of a two-part mold fairly safely and let it air-dry as normal (or indeed do the same thing with air-dry clay as the mold and the casting material). I'm wondering if FIMO would make a good substitute...

So, here's a bit of an update. Haven't done that much. Having a wisdom tooth ripped out really puts a damper on your creativity, as well as a hole in your mouth and wallet.
Being the madman I am I decided to make a load of little gorintōs. Like a whole graveyard full of them.
So I made some easy moulds in oyumaru. That stuff is really amazing, it took me very little time to do them. I had to redo a couple, but that's no problem. And I got some more expertise in mouldmaking.
Here are some of them:
And then I cast a couple in newly bought stone plaster.
And when I say a couple I mean about two dozen. It was like eating crisps, I couldn't stop.
So, there I was, with two dozen gorintōs. My plan was at first to make them rather simply, basically just base them and paint them, but now there's this gorintō-off going on, so I'll have to come up with something really clever. (Or, at least, something clever for being me.)
One reason I wanted to cast them was so that I could roughen up the texture a bit too look more like weathered stone. Good idea. Except that I used that newly bought stone plaster which turned out to be to hard. Hitting it with the business end of my steel brush didn't do much.
But I could maltreat it somewhat to get some sort of structure -except the topmost and middle bits. So, onto the next plan!
I decided that as the different pieces represent different elements (and/or Buddhist tenets), and those are represented by different colours (which seem not always to be the same in different sects/times/etc.) - why not build the thing out of different sorts of coloured stones!
Thus I tried to make different textures on the different pieces. Like this:
Next I'll paint it. And start on the next, there's still four to go!
Nice work!! I think you've convinced me that there is some value in that instamold stuff. I picked up one of pieces this morning and the gorintōs fell apart in my hands... doesn't bode well for trasnport!

What did Ret-AdvanceOp learn today? Don't use marbles, or rough em up with sandpaper if you do. Well, I already knew that but was too keen to put some together. As a result, I've had to remake them 3 times so far :/
Reality is to be avoided, it messes up plans. Many of my plans would be so much easier if not for that pesky reality! And just look at AdvanceOp's marbles - thanks to reality he's about to lose them.

Not certain I've got it in me to scratch build 5, but I have buit a gigantic one which I will upload Pic's of shortly. Greeny saw it last night and seemed to like it.
That looks great Henrix. I love the cracked look you've carved in there. I guess thats one advantage of casting!

So far so good on the breakages. I sanded the marble, and the plaster and paint seems to have given the gorintōs the extra contact surface area and hopefully strength.
It is a bit more grey than the photo shows, but I'll perhaps grey it down some more, Iztvan*. And there'll be some veggies on it, later on.

I don't really know why we're supposed to do five for the gorintō-off, really. It seems a bit odd to change the rules, but if we get more participants I'd gladly just make it best representation of Jwarese gorintōhood, or such.

Jon's is truly the Gorinto of the apocalypse, as for me I'm a little behind everyone else, and my wife says they look like an army of Bertie Bassetts (for those of you who know who that is) but here they are so far- I've also made some Gorinto walls inspired by the photo's Henrix put up:)

Greeny, Bertie Bassets and candy roads... theres a theme here but it's got more to do with Hansel & Gretal than gorintōs :P They look great though. The wall is a great idea. Can't wait to see them painted up.

No photo updates from me today. I've spent most of my time working on a house for Ichio :) However, my Gorinto's are now flocked and drying. I'm off fishing tomorrow and demo'ing Bushido all day at a local games club Sunday but I will try to squeeze in some photo's.
They are great AdvanceOp, wish we could make the tournament and play on some of this. I don't know why but your mention of training and the terrain made me think of Kickboxer, just need broken bamboo and bloody shins.
cheers, the flowers are tiny seafoam stems broken off one of my winter trees, with leaves made from dried willow catkins, glued on then painted red. wanted to see how easy making an Acer like plant would be. not that easy as it turned out:)

And, lastly, and the hardest to take any good pictures of, the over-the-top kitschy blinged one.
For a couple of years I've had the notion that I should use an artificial "diamond" for something. (There's something inherently cool about high refractive indeces, as a friend puts it.) And seeing that the topmost bit on a gorintō is supposed to be shaped like a jewel.
So, this is it. The photo doesn't capture it at all. But it's nice in real life, and quite eyecatching.

The small stones are so brightly colored... like ripe fruit... ripe fruit small stones... fruity pebbles, if you will...
