I had never tried painting fire before so Hotaru was going to be interesting as it is a huge part of the model. Here is the finished result and I put a guide on my blog (link in signiature) as to how I got there in case it is helpful to anyone.

Cheers,
Sam

The thing you HAVE to remember with fire and it's a mistake that's made sooooo many times (take a look at eFeora's flaming base) it that fire is lit from the inside mot outside.
This means you highlight it the opposite way round to anything else - white in the folds / creases / "shadows" of the flaming part, worked up through yellow then orange on the tips of the flames.
This is essentially as the hottest part of the flames, often the heart or centre of the fire is the whitest (much like the sun) and it fades to oranges as it moves away from the source heat.
In the case of hotaru, the flames near her foot would therefore be the brightest and whitest, presumably all centred on her foot itself and glow outwards from there, the arc of the flames being a trail of heat with flames coming off it.
Also, flames typically don't make it to red, stopping at an orange colour (tho being magical I guess they could be a bit different as diff things burn diff colours)
Looks pretty good to me, nice! Looking forward to seeing this fully painted (and on the board!).
Your bases really suit the Temple theme.

I had been using this guide as reference: http://hot-lead.org/advance/fire_prac.htm
I did try a test with light in the folds, and am aware the hottest part is the centre, but it looked a bit rubbish and I would rather the model look nice than get awards for realism on a magical flame!

Looks really good and alot like Alberto's studio job in terms of the flames.

Sure no one thought you were being critical Moosh.

@Moosh I don't think anybody will find you too critical and I myself (and I think others too) have Hotaru in the mail and face the daunting task of painting flames. Any help is highly appreciated.
@Rudders Thank you for the link it will be a great help once my Hotaru arrives. Awesome paint job on yours.
